Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing like going to see a great work of art in person and taking in it’s awe, but it’s not easy traveling to Madrid, Prague and Moscow in one day! So google has done the leg work for you and has launched the google art project that let’s you explore great museums and works of art, all from your desktop. You can even get up close to Rembrandts and Van Goghs and examine those amazing brush strokes. Great for giving a first art history lesson to your tots at home!

I’ve been doing research for my upcoming trip to London, and came across the promotions for the London Design Festival, which I will unfortunately miss by a few days! Anyway, I hope some of the museum installations will still be on display, especially this one by Zieta from Poland at the Victoria & Albert Museum. They make artwork and design pieces from inflating pieces of sheet metal steel…who knew you could do such a thing! It looks like their inspiration for this installation came from a party blower. Also check out their interesting chairs and stools, which look like mylar balloons, but are really serious technology at work!

Everyone knows how much I adore the apps on the iphone. But I must admit I don’t usually go for apps that you have to pay for, and stick with the free versions available. I did recently splurge though for the Jamie Oliver 20-minute meals app and it’s become my favorite. I tip my hat to Zolmo Limited who created this app, not only do I love the cool design, it’s all the little touches they added to make it so enjoyable to use. I enjoy cooking but can’t say I’m a great chef, this app has step by step instructions along with photos and audio tips that make it just about impossible to screw up. Of course there are great videos, which you download so that they’re always handy on your phone, essential when you’re without a wifi connection. And my last favorite feature is the list maker which takes your chosen recipe and creates a shopping list which you can edit and add to, it even organizes your list by aisle! I can’t say enough good things. For the busy parent who wants to cook a healthy easy meal, check it out.

Teresa, our in-house Senior Designer, sent me the link to this awesome collection of custom designed Eames chairs which will be auctioned off to benefit Operation Design. This organization pairs architects and designers with public schools (K-12) to design motivating spaces and promote the belief that great design creates conducive environments in which to learn, work and thrive. This auction features NYC street artists who customized Eames molded plywood chairs. You can view them online here or in the windows of Barneys NYC through June 1st. If you’re in the market for some great art for a great cause, check it out.
